An Idea Coming to Life: Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign

(Click the "CC" button in the right-hand lower corner of the video to switch on closed captions in English or Japanese.) From concept to reality in little more than a year, Nissan and Italdesign have created a new prototype vehicle – Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign – in their first-ever collaboration to celebrate two golden anniversaries: 50 years of GT-R, in 2019, and 50 years of Italdesign, in 2018. Head of Nissan’s Global Design Alfonso Albaisa, Italdesign CEO Jörg Astalosch and Nissan Design Europe Vice President Mamoru Aoki describe the unprecedented collaboration between their designers and engineers, to create what could become the blueprint for a limited run of hand-built production vehicles. The Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign is based on the latest GT-R NISMO, reinterpreted with a European-style sensibility combining Japanese performance and Italian craftsmanship. While Italdesign developed, engineered and constructed the car in Turin, Italy, the distinctive, exterior and interior designs originated from Nissan’s design centers in London and San Diego. 2017 Nissan GT-R at Nissan Tochigi factory

Making its global debut at the New York International Auto Show this past March, the 2017 Nissan GT-R has been updated with an exciting new look both inside and out, as well as major driving performance enhancements in key areas, including a significantly reinforced chassis and more power from its twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter 24-valve V-6. The new GT-R is also more comfortable than ever, with a new sense of elegance and civility that one would rarely find in such a high-performance super sports car. In all, these revisions represent the most significant changes made to the model since it was introduced in the U.S. as a 2009 model.

Nissan GT-R50 italdesign – Nissan GTR 2018

Nissan GT-R50 italdesign first look - Nissan GTR 2018 Nissan and Italdesign have created a new prototype vehicle – the Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign – in their first-ever collaboration. Based on a production 2018 Nissan GT-R NISMO model, the unique car commemorates the 50th anniversaries of both the GT-R and Italdesign and will make its debut in Europe next month. “How often do you get to ask, ‘What if we created a GT-R without limits,’ and then actually get to build it?” said Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s senior vice president for global design. “This is a rare window in time when two big moments intersect: 50 years of Italdesign shaping the automotive world and 50 years of Nissan generating excitement through our iconic GT-R. So to celebrate this convergence, Nissan and Italdesign created this custom GT-R to mark 50 years of engineering leadership.”

Nissan produced a high performance version of its Skyline coupe called the Nissan Skyline GT-R. This car proved to be iconic for Nissan[5][6] and achieved much fame and success on both road and track. The Nissan GT-R, now a standalone model no longer based on the Skyline, has heritage in the Nissan Skyline GT-R.

Similar to the later generations of the Skyline GT-R, the GT-R is four-wheel drive with a twin-turbo 6 cylinder engine and has the signature four round tail lights. However, the GT-R is an entirely new model, sharing little with its Skyline siblings and is a complete redesign from previous Skylines, rather than an incremental evolution; the four-wheel-steering HICAS system has been removed and the former straight-6 RB26DETT engine has been replaced with a new V6 VR38DETT.
