2018 Audi A8 - INTERIOR

Luxury lounge: the interior Freedom is the defining design feature with a new luxury slant. This explains the A8’s resemblance to a lavish, spacious lounge. Compared to the predecessor model, it has grown substantially in length in both body versions. The range of equipment and materials is extensive, with every detail radiating superlative bespoke quality – from the perforation in the seat upholstery to the electrically opened and closed shutters on the air vents. The classiest seat in the new Audi flagship model is in the rear right – the optional relaxation seat in the A8 L that comes with four different adjustment options and a footrest. In this seat, the passenger can warm and massage the soles of their feet on a unit with multiple settings incorporated into the back of the front-passenger seat. The new comfort head restraints complete the experience. The rear passengers can also control an array of functions such as ambient lighting, the new HD Matrix reading lights and seat massage, plus make private phone calls, via a separate operating unit. The rear seat remote, with its OLED display as large as a smartphone, is a removable unit housed in the center armrest. Fingertip response: the controls The luxury sedan’s interior deliberately adopts a reductive design; the interior architecture is clear and with a strictly horizontal orientation. Audi carries its high quality standards into the digital age with a radically new operating concept. It does away with the familiar rotary pushbutton and touchpad of the predecessor model. The instrument panel is kept largely clear of buttons and switches. At its center is a 10.1-inch touchscreen display which, when off, blends almost invisibly into the high-gloss black surround thanks to its black-panel look. The user interface appears as soon as the car is opened. The driver controls the Infotainment system with fingertip control on the large display. They can use a second touchscreen display on the center tunnel console to access the air conditioning and comfort functions as well as make text inputs. When the driver activates a function in the upper or lower display, they hear and feel a click by way of confirmation. The glass-look operating buttons respond in the same way. The combination of acoustic and tactile feedback along with the use of common touch gestures such as swiping make the new MMI touch response especially safe, intuitive and quick to use. The A8 can also engage in intelligent conversation. The driver can activate an array of functions in the automobile using a new, natural form of voice control. Information on destinations and media is either available on board or is delivered from the cloud at LTE speed. The extensive Audi connect range also includes traffic sign recognition and hazard information – innovative car-to-X services that draw on the swarm intelligence of the Audi fleet. The extensively optimized navigation is another new feature: It is self-learning, based on the route just driven. This provides the driver with intelligent search suggestions. With its two twin scroll turbochargers, it develops 430 kW (585 hp) from a displacement of 5,950 cm3. Its 800 Nm (590.0 lb-ft) of torque is available constantly between 1,300 and 5,000 rpm. Like the 4.0 TFSI, the twelve-cylinder engine features COD (cylinder on demand) technology. At low loads and engine speeds, it shuts down the left-hand cylinder bank to trim fuel consumption. The new Audi A8 and A8 L are being built at the Neckarsulm site and will appear on the German market in late fall 2017. 2019 Audi Q8 Review Characteristic aerodynamic features in the front and rear are a prominent part of the Audi Q8 sport concept design. The highly efficient drive system concept of the study is particularly groundbreaking. The 3.0 TFSI six-cylinder engine featuring a mild hybrid system and an electric powered compressor is a world first. The result: the Q8 sport concept presents itself as a multi-disciplined athlete with a number of talents. Thanks to its 350 kW (476 hp) output and its 700 Newton meters (516.3 lb-ft) of torque, it sprints from 0 - 100 km/h (0 ‑ 62.1 mph) in just 4.7 seconds and keeps going until it reaches its top speed of 275 km/h (170.9 mph). Meanwhile, its range of more than 1,200 kilometers (745.6 mi) ensures it is also suitable for long journeys. Highly efficient power package: the drive system The architecture of the drive system in the new Audi Q8 sport concept is revolutionary: for the first time ever, Audi is combining a 331 kW (450 hp) 3.0 TFSI six-cylinder engine with an electric powered compressor and an effective mild hybrid system for recuperation. The starter generator positioned between the crankshaft and the transmission handles recuperation and, if required, can work in the opposite direction as an additional electric motor. The 48-volt electrical system assures the supply of electrical power. For the customer, this approach has a number of advantages: the energy recovered as part of recuperation can, if required, be used to increase performance. During boost operation – where the combustion engine and electric motor are used simultaneously – the electric motor’s additional 20 kW of output and its torque of 170 Nm (125.4 lb-ft) open up a total of 350 kW of power to the engine and bring its total torque up to 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft). The result is sporty acceleration from any speed and rev range. Luxury lounge for four: the interior The interior of the Audi Q8 sport concept offers opulent spaciousness for four persons and their large suitcases. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 630 liters (22.2 cu ft). Widely stretched lines lend the cockpit a sporty yet elegant ambiance. Virtually floating above the center tunnel is a console for the shift‑by‑wire lever with which the driver controls the eight-speed tiptronic transmission purely electronically. The wrap‑around begins in the front doors. This large, horizontal arc runs along the lower edge of the windshield and frames both the driver’s and front passenger’s seats without hemming in the occupants. The sport seats as well as the two individual seats in the rear are made up of segments that appear to be separate geometric bodies, from the pronounced side bolsters to the head restraints. A horizontal aluminum trim piece divides the backrests at the height of the window belt line. Other, more modest options will include a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 (if that can ever be called modest) and a hybrid iX7 that combines a four-cylinder petrol engine with a powerful electric motor. Whichever engine you choose, the X7 will come with four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox as standard. Interior No images of the production car’s interior have emerged but, once again, the concept gives us a good idea of what to expect when the X7 goes on sale in late 2018. A similar minimalist dashboard to the latest 7 Series will come with two large digital displays – one above the centre console and another behind the steering wheel in place of conventional analogue dials. Lashings of plush leather and cool metallic trims will make the new X7’s cabin feel just as luxurious as in the likes of the Mercedes GLS while its huge size will make sure there’s space in all seven of its seats for adults. Top-spec cars will come with iPad-like displays in the seat headrests to keep your passengers entertained on long drives. Price and release date The finished X7 should make its first public appearance in mid-2018 and go on sale before 2019. Entry-level ars are expected to cost from around £75,000 while high-performance V8 versions could set you back more than £100,000.
