The new Audi A8 vs Mercedes S-Class Review The new flagship from Ingolstadt Audi A8 came with a lot of innovations up against the Mercedes S-Class facelift. Are these innovations good enough to beat the supremacy of the Mercedes S-Class? Since many years, Mercedes S-Class is the bestseller in the luxury class and Audi A8 was always the third rival after BMW 7 Series. This situation was unchanged also in the first three months of 2017. Mercedes old 3,800 S-Class in USA and 3,708 in Europe while Audi A8 has reached to only 800 clients in USA and 1,361 in Europe. The new Audi A8 is offered as before in two versions. The standard wheelbase version has 5,172 mm in length and a wheelbase of 2,998 mm compared with 5,125 mm and respectively 3,035 mm for S-Class. The longer wheelbase Audi A8 has 5,302 mm in length and an wheelbase of 3,128 mm, while S-Class has a little longer wheelbase of 3,165 mm and a slightly shorter length of 5,255 mm. Audi promise a lightweight construction with a mix of aluminum (58%), steel, magnesium and carbon fiber. Even the figures were not announced yet, we expect that the new A8 will be lighter. S-Class pays tribute to an intensive use of insulating materials which make it the quietest in its class but also heavier. The interior of the new Audi A8 belongs to a new era with three displays and physical controllers reduced to the minimum. The virtual indicators on the 12.3 inch well known display and the 10.1 inch display of the MMI new multimedia system with quad-core Nvidia processor will join a third 8.6 inch curve display for the clima and audio system. Mercedes S-Class maintain the solution with the huge 2 x 12.3 inch displays. The left display is operated from the steering wheel buttons with swipe function like in the new E-Class while the central display of the Comand Online multimedia system is operated by the classic controller and the touchpad mounted on the central console. As always, Audi A8 promise more sporty behavior with the optional integral steering (the Quattro integral traction is standard across the range). Also new is the active intelligent suspension which use the 48V network. Audi A8 starts with two V6 engines: 3.0 TDI with 286 HP and 600 Nm and 3.0 TFSI petrol with 340 HP and 500 Nm. Mercedes S-Class will benefit of the new 6 inline diesel 3 liter engines with one turbo (S 350 d 4Matic with 286 HP and 600 Nm) and two turbos (S 400 d 4Matic with 340 HP and 700 Nm). In 2018, Audi A8 will get the fabulous 4.0 V8 TDI with 435 HP and the 4.0 V8 TFSI with 460 HP. The last one will compete against the new Mercedes S 560 4Matic with 460 HP and 700 Nm. Mercedes does not announced yet the new figures for the Plug-In Hybrid S 500 e, but Audi will offer a similar version with the former S 500 e, powered by a 3.0 TFSI V6 thermic engine mated with an electric engine which will be ready for 449 HP and 700 Nm and an electric range of 50 km. The “smallest” AMG version S 63 AMG will get 612 HP and 900 Nm from the 4.0 liter bi-turbo V8 while Audi A8 will come in 2018 with the top luxury version 6.0 liter W12 with 585 HP and 800 Nm. The Audi S8 will follow later. Despite Mercedes has a lot of modern assistance system and a remote parking using an interface on the smartphone, the new Audi A8 come with much more. The new A8 is the first production automobile to have been developed specially for highly automated driving. The Audi AI traffic jam pilot takes charge of driving in slow-moving traffic at up to 60 km/h on freeways and highways where a physical barrier separates the two carriageways. The system is activated using the AI button on the center console. The traffic jam pilot manages starting, accelerating, steering and braking. The driver no longer needs to monitor the car permanently. They can take their hands off the steering wheel permanently and, depending on the national laws, focus on a different activity that is supported by the car, such as watching the on-board TV. As soon as the system reaches its limits, it calls on the driver to take back control of the task of driving. The Audi AI remote parking pilot and the Audi AI remote garage pilot autonomously steer the A8 into and out of a parking space or a garage, while the maneuver is monitored by the driver. The driver need not be sitting in the car. Luxury lounge: the interior Freedom is the defining design feature with a new luxury slant. This explains the A8’s resemblance to a lavish, spacious lounge. Compared to the predecessor model, it has grown substantially in length in both body versions. The range of equipment and materials is extensive, with every detail radiating superlative bespoke quality – from the perforation in the seat upholstery to the electrically opened and closed shutters on the air vents. The classiest seat in the new Audi flagship model is in the rear right – the optional relaxation seat in the A8 L that comes with four different adjustment options and a footrest. In this seat, the passenger can warm and massage the soles of their feet on a unit with multiple settings incorporated into the back of the front-passenger seat. The new comfort head restraints complete the experience. The rear passengers can also control an array of functions such as ambient lighting, the new HD Matrix reading lights and seat massage, plus make private phone calls, via a separate operating unit. The rear seat remote, with its OLED display as large as a smartphone, is a removable unit housed in the center armrest. Fingertip response: the controls The luxury sedan’s interior deliberately adopts a reductive design; the interior architecture is clear and with a strictly horizontal orientation. Audi carries its high quality standards into the digital age with a radically new operating concept. It does away with the familiar rotary pushbutton and touchpad of the predecessor model. The instrument panel is kept largely clear of buttons and switches. At its center is a 10.1-inch touchscreen display which, when off, blends almost invisibly into the high-gloss black surround thanks to its black-panel look. The user interface appears as soon as the car is opened. The driver controls the Infotainment system with fingertip control on the large display. They can use a second touchscreen display on the center tunnel console to access the air conditioning and comfort functions as well as make text inputs. When the driver activates a function in the upper or lower display, they hear and feel a click by way of confirmation. The glass-look operating buttons respond in the same way. The combination of acoustic and tactile feedback along with the use of common touch gestures such as swiping make the new MMI touch response especially safe, intuitive and quick to use. The A8 can also engage in intelligent conversation. The driver can activate an array of functions in the automobile using a new, natural form of voice control. Information on destinations and media is either available on board or is delivered from the cloud at LTE speed. The extensive Audi connect range also includes traffic sign recognition and hazard information – innovative car-to-X services that draw on the swarm intelligence of the Audi fleet. The extensively optimized navigation is another new feature: It is self-learning, based on the route just driven. This provides the driver with intelligent search suggestions. New 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class takes another major step towards autonomous driving, elevating Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive to the next level. The range of driving assistance and safety systems features a modular design and as standard includes Active Braking Assist, Crosswind Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST, Traffic Sign Assist and also the occupant protection system PRE-SAFE. New and also part of the standard specification is PRE-SAFE Sound (prepares human hearing for the anticipated accident noise when there is a risk of a collision). Active Distance Control DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. Audi has once again further developed its armored high-security sedan. At the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main, the premium brand is presenting the most secure Audi ever in the form of the A8 L Security. The car will satisfy the criteria of the class VR 9 ballistic protection standard, currently the most stringent requirements for civilian high-security sedans. Audi has once again made its armored security sedan even more robust. For instance, from now on the safety cell of the new Audi A8 L Security will integrate extremely resistant materials – aramide fabric, special aluminum alloys and a hot-formed steel armor that offers even more protection despite its lower weight. Audi engineers also further developed the vehicle’s glazing. These improvements mean that the total vehicle is now certified to the requirements of resistance class VR 9. It has been tested for resistance to explosive charges in accordance with the ERV 2010 guideline. Previously, the A8 L Security fulfilled resistance class VR 7. The company manufacturers each order entirely under its own supervision in a partnership between the Neckarsulm plant and a secure, top-secret factory. Standard security features of the luxury sedan include an armored communication box in the luggage compartment, an intercom for communication with the outside world and selective door unlocking. Upon request, Audi can deliver solutions such as its patented emergency exit system, a fire extinguishing system and an emergency fresh air system. Along with standard comfort features such as the relaxation seat at the rear, Audi can also satisfy individual requests. The Audi A8 L Security assumes a unique position in its segment. Its quattro drive makes it the only luxury sedan with an all-wheel drive system that is offered directly from the manufacturer as an armored high-security vehicle. Thanks to the high share of aluminum in the body, the vehicle’s weight is relatively low. Nonetheless, it can handle a maximum payload of 600 kg (1,322.8 lb), which is the best figure in the competitive field. Two engines are available for the high-security sedan. The 4.0 TFSI, a biturbo V8, has a power output of 320 kW (435 hp) and produces 600 Nm (442.5 lb-ft) of torque. The naturally aspirated W 12 FSI offers 368 kW (500 hp) and 625 Nm (461.0 lb‑ft) of torque. Its torque performance is strong, and its top speed is electronically governed to 210 km/h (130.5 mph) – a limit set in consideration of the tires that possess exceptional emergency flat-running properties. The entire chassis and the quattro permanent all-wheel drive are specifically designed to meet the high security requirements.
