An animation reel showcasing some of my work while assisting Frictional Games on their title Soma. All animation and rigs were done by me. www.mikaelpersson.se :: if you'd like to get in touch for future co-operations.

A Declaration: Welcome to the Gameological Dig, a channel devoted to playing games with obtuse and interesting stories. The aim of this channel is to treat these game worlds like an archeological site, meant to be unearthed and studied, so that we may better understand their plots, characters and themes. In this, the inaugural episode of the Gameological Dig, we explore site Upsilon, from the video game, SOMA. We'll spend time exploring the purpose and functions of Upsilon, while learning what happened to its inhabitants, and why it was ultimately abandoned. This is a brand new channel, created by a dude who is new to whole content generation thing. Admittedly, things may be rough at first, but with time, and with support, I hope to create a channel unlike any other. If you like what you see, please "like" and "subscribe." There will be more content soon. If you have any ideas for content, feel free to leave them in the comments. Just a disclaimer, I don't have a PC...yet, so I will be doing primarily console games. But don't let that discourage you. When papa ain't so broke, I'll be sure to join the master race, and expand on the game catalogue then. Thanks, folks. Some episode notes: I recorded this in 1080p using the Elgato Game Capture HD. However, for some reason, iMovie is only allowing me to export this in 720. If anyone has any advice, please message me and I'll be sure to credit you in the next video. Game Notes: To those unaware, Soma is a science fiction survival horror video game developed by Frictional Games and released on 22 September 2015. The game takes place on PATHOS-II, an underwater remote research facility with machinery that begins to take human characteristics. The game primarily utilizes elements of psychological horror instead of conventional scares found in most video games within the genre. Throughout the game, the player will find a large array of clues, such as notes and audio tapes, which builds atmosphere and furthers the plot. Similar to most titles by Frictional Games, there is no combat, and instead the player progresses through puzzle-solving, exploration and the use of stealth.
Frictional Games' SOMA comes packaged with a supersecret zip file containing artwork, design documents, and videos from the game's development process. I wanted to show this off, but not just drop a bunch of jpegs set to music. So, I dove into SOMA's texture files, 3D models, and sound files as well, piled everything together, and tried to paint a picture of what SOMA was going to look like earlier in its development, what was changed, what was dropped from the game, and so on. All the music in this video is straight from SOMA's game files as well, including some unused tracks. Hope you enjoy. The March 2013 Vertical Slice video included in the zip file is uploaded to my channel and has annotations to provide more context: https://youtu.be/FDpD4XBD3QY SA thread: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3764000 Twitter: @davidspackage
Finally safe enough to experience this, and thank goodness! This has stuck in my mind. Recommended for most, but especially fans of System Shock & similar.
