A significant weight loss, 4-cylinder engine lineup, and a more compact size allow the latest Chevrolet Equinox to better challenge its Japanese rivals in the very competitive compact SUV segment. Buyers looking for the newest American offerings should check one out, but some may experience a bit of sticker shock on top trim models.
It takes something special to stand out in a sea of crossover SUVs and the new Chevy Equinox does just that by losing weight and opting for a fuel efficient turbocharged engine. The third generation Equinox is here and Chevrolet has completely redesigned this crossover from the ground up for the 2018 model year. The Equinox comes in 4 different trim levels ranging in price from $23,580 to $37,230. The trim level tested here in this video is the Premier which starts at $30,790. The Equinox is in the tough compact crossover SUV segment and the competition is heavy with the likes of the Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, and the Mazda CX-5. The new 2018 Chevy Equinox is 400 lbs. lighter and a couple of inches shorter than the second generation model. Under the hood is a standard 1.5 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 174 horsepower and 203 lb-ft. of torque. Fuel economy ratings are 26 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway for the FWD model and 24 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway for the AWD model.
