The paddock, where the race starts, is 9,000 feet above sea level. And if you’re Volkswagen, bringing the new electric I.D. R Pikes Peak racer presents a whole different set of challenges, not least of which is charging. The rules for Pikes Peak say that if a participant is forced to suspend their run for safety reasons -- if it starts to hail, say, or another car needs a recovery -- the team has exactly 20 minutes to prepare for its second run. In a normal car, no problem. Refill it with the least amount of gas possible and be on your way. For VW, though, that means a quick charge to the I.D. R’s lithium-ion battery. And that causes heat, among other problems. The battery is split into two blocks next to and behind the cockpit. It's very power dense, considering it’s going for the highest possible output. The I.D. R delivers about 670 hp, good for a sprint to 60 mph in just 2.25 seconds. To keep heat low, VW uses two rapid-charging systems simultaneously, each with an output of 90 kW, designed to limit heat development, the company says. The problem is the ambient temperature in the paddock, which can range from almost freezing to the mid-80-degree range. So, VW brings cooling fans in case such a situation arises. Additionally, if you’re going to all this expense to run up the mountain on clean electric power, using a dirty, oily diesel generator to make it seems like an ironic twist of fate. Instead, VW packs a glycerol-powered unit that burns with “virtually no harmful exhaust fumes or residue.”“The glycerol-powered generator not only supplies the I.D. R Pikes Peak with environmentally friendly electricity before the practice sessions and the race,” explains Marc-Christian Bertram, head of electrics and electronics at Volkswagen Motorsport, “but also all the electrical devices in our pit area during the race, from the engineers’ laptops to the coffee machine.”The 96th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb happens at 8 a.m. June 24. A class to be introduced for the 2020-21 World Endurance Championship calls for purebred racing prototypes that manufacturers will be able to style after their road-going machinery. The idea is that car will look like "hypercars, supercars, luxury GTs or concept cars," according to Richard Mille, president of the FIA's endurance commission. Unlike the Daytona Prototype international machinery that races in the IMSA SportsCar Championship, each manufacturer or constructor will build their own chassis. The new cars will incorporate hybrid technology, although at a lower level of sophistication and power than in the current LMP1 class of the WEC. The cars will have less downforce and be heavier by 110 kilograms than the present generation of LMP1s, but an extra 200 bhp from their internal combustion engines means that they will achieve similar lap times to the current P1s. The target is for them to hit 3 minutes, 20 seconds in qualifying at Le Mans, which is five seconds slower than pole position for this weekend's race. The rule makers, the FIA and the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, will equate the performance of what could be a range of diverse-looking cars by setting maximum downforce and drag levels for the cars. This will also help to reduce costs to as little as 25 percent of current levels by limiting development costs. The introduction of active aerodynamics will also play a part in the cost reduction plan. It will enable the rule-makers to limit each manufacturer to one aerodynamic configuration for the six-hour WEC races and Le Mans. Manufacturers developing energy-retrieval technology, which will be limited to a front-axle kinetic system, will have to make it available to other marques and constructors. Each will have to supply a minimum number of teams, which has yet to be determined. FIA president Jean Todt said: "The new regulations are the result of hard work between members of the FIA, ACO, manufacturers and teams. This will provide endurance racing with a long-term, stable platform while continuing to offer a cost-effective stage to showcase future technologies."Six manufacturers have been actively involved in the rule-making process: Toyota, Ford, Aston Martin, Ferrari and McLaren. Porsche has been an observer in the process. The final rules should be drafted in time to be signed off before the end of the year. That will be 50 years of "Vorsprung Durch Technik," which fittingly means "advancement through technology."At 214 inches long, the self-driving Aicon is 9 inches longer than a long-wheelbase A8. This allows for a large interior with no dash, steering wheel or instruments and with front seats more like lounge chairs, able to swivel 15 degrees. The Aicon will get two electric motors putting out about 350 hp total. Audi says it should be good for about 500 miles of range. It should also get a comfy air suspension and four-wheel steering for tight spots. Inside, there’s no steering wheel, just a wraparound display that we’re guessing handles everything from climate to navigation to media and entertainment. That bleeds into Audi's philosophy behind the car: The company wants the Aicon to act as a third living space, in addition to your home and work.
